Your domain name is an aspect of your cyber identity, so you should do your best to protect it at all costs. If it becomes compromised, it can put your website and your entire organization at risk and interrupt your services. Top domains end in .com, and they are the most prone to cyber threats like hacking, social engineering, phishing, and hijacking. Even the biggest companies and brands (i.e. Google, Twitter, and Forbes) have been victimized by those attacks, all the more reason for you to recognize and understand the importance of protecting your domain name. Even if you think that your organization is not as attention-worthy as those bigger companies, it is still at risk.

The first step to protecting your cyber identity is to establish proper domain ownership. Register it to you and keep the data updated at all times. Be careful when allowing someone from your IT team to register your domain under their name. This may make it easier for them to administrate, but it can become troublesome should the person leave or have a problem with you. Likewise, be careful when working with third-party web designers. Always have your domain name registered in your name or your company, so you can be sure that you have full control of its ownership.

Having two names on the domain name registration is a good way to protect your organization’s cyber identity, too. Find a trusted business partner or administrator in your company, so you or that other person will be notified in case there are changes in your domain ownership.

Another risk to your cyber identity is having someone else use your domain name. One of the ways to protect it is to have your trademark registered. Keep your domain name registered and renew it annually to prevent another organization or entity from using it, and to prevent confusion among your customers and patrons.
